Hello,
I hope everyone’s summer is going well! Mine is flying by. I cannot believe that it is already July! Well a lot has happened in the last two weeks. The Santa Fe Opera opened two shows with great reviews. We opened “Madame Butterfly” and “The Magic Flute.” The opening night of “Madame Butterfly” was amazing. We got a really bad storm that night and during the climax of the opera (I wont give it away) there was a massive thunderclap and lighting! The wind was carrying the rain in circles onto the stage. You could not have asked for a better ending for that show. Mother Nature at her best it was!! It was really cool to be backstage helping the singers get dressed and say to your self “ Yeah I made that!” That is always a good feeling.
This coming week we will be opening the third show of the season “The Tales of Hoffman.” We start dress rehearsals on Monday and the opening night is on Friday! For Hoffman we have to make 20 iridescent taffeta dresses! Which they are a little behind schedule right now. The pieces are there we just have to put them together! They are intense, as soon as I can get a picture I will share it with you! I am really excited to see SUNY Fredonia’s production of “The Tales of Hoffman” that is coming up this fall!
With all of these shows going on and the long hours you may wonder how am I doing. Well, I am exhausted; everyone is really. When you have a bunch of sleep deprived people tensions do flare up! We are working long hours everyday! It is “crunch time” as some would say! I am also getting anxious to go back to school! I miss New York! It is funny when people ask me where I am from and I say New York they get all excited and say “How do you like the city!” Some people only think New York is New York City!! HAHAHA…Then I have to explain that I live in Central New York not the city!
I guess that is all the update that I can give you now! More to come soon!!

With the arrival of the month of July, a changing of the guard has taken place within the department. Prof. Tom Loughlin has officially become Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, and emeritus chair and Prof. Steve Rees has officially embarked on the next journey of his career, taking time this month for a trip out west to visit his son Dylan, and then returning in August as Project Shepard for the planned addition to the Rockefeller Arts Center. Happy travels, Steve!

In the process of cleaning out his office, Prof. Rees found a very unique and historic picture, and it seems appropriate to post it here at this time. This photo was taken on the occasion of emeritus Prof. Gary Eckhart’s retirement, and it is the only known picture that features all the past chairs of the Department of Theatre and Dance. Take a look:

Dr. Jack Cogdill, founding chair of the department, is in front. Standing L-R: Dr. James Ivey, Prof. Steve Rees, Dr. Bob Klassen, Prof. Joe Totaro

Finally, on a very sad note, the department has learned that Holly Phillips, the husband of emeritus Prof. Mary Charbonnet, recently passed away. Holly’s contributions to the department were enormous. His skills as a carpenter and upholsterer were legendary, and he was always willing to contribute his artistry whenever asked. He was the epitome of the southern gentleman; polite, kind, hard-working, generous of spirit, and a friend to all who knew him. The department extends its deepest sympathy to Mary on her loss. Alumni who are interested in contacting Mary to extend their condolences can contact the department at theatre.dance@fredonia.edu for contact information.

Aloha from Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington! This week Alyssa and I have found ourselves in the picturesque, lively, wonderful town of Friday Harbor. Island life is treating us very well and the children we are working with are incredibly talented and focused!

This is the first residency in which Alyssa and I are in separate home-stays, her with a fabulous woman named Lori, and me with a fantastic couple named Bob and Judy. Bob and Judy’s spacious home (reminiscent of a Northwest Native art gallery and lined with pictures that Bob, a photographer, has taken on his travels around the world) is perched atop the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Basically, as I eat my eat my breakfast and sip my coffee in the morning, I watch Orca whales hunt for salmon and bald eagles soaring in the sky…

Can someone pinch me, please? I can’t believe this is just part of my job!!

I promise to post more later on this week, but I know that many of you avid readers have been hungry for some sort of update on what I’ve been up to. Please know that I feel so grateful that this blog has garnered so much interest, and I hope that you enjoy reading about my adventures as much as I enjoy sharing them with you!

Many well wishes from the North Pacific!

P.S. Here are some photos from our residency last week in Eastsound, Washington (on Orcas Island) — Enjoy!

Sorry for the delay in my updates! Last week we worked really hard trying to get Magic Flute and Madame Butterfly out of the shop. It was a difficult week for me. I kept making silly stupid mistakes and I was just getting really upset! It got a little better towards the end of the week. I worked a lot on the Magic Flute alterations. I did a lot of work on the children’s costumes. I will be in charge of dressing the children for the run of the show. I learned quite a bit about alterations since Magic Flute was a remount. The shop just had to do alterations instead of creating all new costumes.
This past week started out really bad. Lara, my draper, worked a lot with me one on one. It was nice that she wanted to work with me by myself. My task was to finish up the obis, which will be used in Madame Butterfly. They are the Japanese “belts” that tie the kimono around your waist. Our team was in charge of four of these obis. So Tuesday, Lara had me sew on the hook/bars, and snaps to close these obis. For some reason it took me all day to sew on the attachments for two of the obis. I don’t really know why it took me that long. Each obi had about 8 sets of closures, a mixture of snaps and hook/bars. Well, Weds. Lara was really mad that it took me that long. She gave me the last two and told me that I had to finish them before lunch. Which I did!! She was pretty tough on me all week. It sucked for a couple days. But I know that she was just pushing me to make me a better stitcher. Which I am proud to say, she told me that I had made great improvements this week.
On Thursday I went to the Santa Fe Rodeo!!! That was so much fun. I have never been to a rodeo. It was cool to see the bull riders and to watch the cowboys. There were several different “events” that the cowboys did. There was bull riding, barrel racing, bucking bronco, and several others. It was fun!! It was kind of like a smaller version of a fair.
Friday was a pretty busy day because we were trying to finish up the show. I also started out dressing schedule. When we have shows or dress rehearsals, our schedule is 10-5 in the shop sewing and 7pm -1 or 2am running the shows. We had our first dress rehearsal for Madame Butterfly on Friday. It was a lot of hurry up and wait. I am in charge of four chorus members. I have to make sure that they get dressed correctly. They are only on stage for about 20 minutes in the first act, and then they are done. Then on Saturday we had our first dress rehearsal for the Magic Flute. For this show, I am in charge of 11 children. It was a crazy night. We didn’t get home until 2am. It was a really long day and night.
This coming week we have rehearsals and shows all week. Madame Butterfly opens on July 2nd and The Magic Flute opens on July 3rd. It is going to be a very busy week. In the shop we will be working on building 16 chorus dresses for the Tales of Hoffman. They are big and full of ruffles. We have only about three weeks to complete these dresses. It will be a really busy couples of weeks.
NOTE: The pictures are of the fabric storage space in the costume Shop and of the Santa Fe Rodeo

Hello all!

So my second year as music director has started with Footlights Summer Theatre through the city of Erie. We’re doing Damn Yankees with EIGHTY children aged 5-18. The first week was audition prep work and on Friday, the staff sat down and cast the show. Every child is cast in the show but we do have to cast the lead roles. It was very challenging because we have a lot of talented little kids this year… but they’re still too young to play a role like Lola. This past week, we planned on teaching a group number and blocking act 1. In the mornings, we work with everyone and in the afternoons, we only keep the leads/older kids who play smaller roles (which is a huge group this year). We ended up vocally learning ALL of the group numbers because the kids are so on this year. I love my job so much because I wake up every day and teach something I love to kids who want to learn just as much as I can teach.

This job last year was a dream come true because I had always wanted a chance to conduct an orchestra. This year brings a whole new meaning to “dream realized.” When I got the music, there were 22 orchestra parts. I thought I might get 10 players if I was lucky. Currently, I have a full reed section, nearly full brass section, full rhythm section, and i’m slowly acquiring string players! For the first time, I get to conduct a FULL ORCHESTRA PIT!! And the best part is, that isn’t the most amazing thing to happen this summer. I’ve often been asked why I want to pursue a career which cuold bring me fame/acclamation if I don’t want to be FAMOUS. I never had a role model growing up. Kids who wanted to be in the theatre didn’t have any upstanding actors to look up to. I want to be that person. I want to be the person to show that you can succeed by following what you want without having to give in to corruption that happens so readily in today’s world. During this process, I’ve had a child come up to me and ask “when I get older, do you think I can be just like you?” Moments like that cannot be described with words. It really shows me that I’m on the right path.

Another lesson I’ve learned this summer: opportunities are always out there. I recently auditioned for a production of Rent at the theatre I grew up at. I came to learn that it’s definitely not the same place I got my roots. I was a little bummed about the whole thing but I began looking around for something I could do. I found a local place called “The Hangout” that supports local teenagers/young adults and encourages them to make friends and try new things without temptation of drugs/alcohol/etc. It was once an old movie theatre and there are some platforms still in place. While on Samuel French, I found a musical version of the book Children’s Letters to God. Tonight, the ball finally started to move. If all works out, in August, I will be mounting a production of this show in a small local place. The show is family friendly and the best part is, I will be bringing a kind of performance to life that this community doesn’t often see. The local high school does grade A high school performances. But that’s all this town is really used to without having to travel into Erie. I’m so excited to see something new in the community. And it’s all because I was told “no” from my first option.

I guess my point is that “no” should never stop you. If I had given up for the summer, I would never have found this opportunity to try something new that could benefit, not only myself, but the cast I’ll be looking for and the entire community! Theatre is a kind of art that is much different from anything else. It inspires us to view the world around us differently. I’ll keep the updates coming on this new show and on Damn Yankees!

Wishing you all well,

KAB

Yes, I am still alive! I have not a) fallen off a treacherous highway into the Pacific Ocean, b) not been TAD-napped by a swarm of rowdy children, nor c) gotten lost in the no-man’s land of the American North West. The past week and a half I have simply (though terribly inconveniently) been without a laptop and internet, though the problem has been resolved and I am now back in the blogging game!

Sunday, June 13, Alyssa and I waved ‘bon voyage’ to Missoula, Montana and hit the highway to The Dalles, Oregon! We drove through the most GORGEOUS stretches of road in Montana, Idaho and Washington en route to Oregon, and the city of The Dalles itself is breathtaking. We made good time on our journey, and were greeted by our fabulous contact Melanie once we arrived in Wasco County. We drove by The Dalles-Wahtonka High School where we would be based for the week, and then headed to our homestay’s home in the hills of The Dalles; Ray and Wendy are probably some of the most warm, welcoming people I have met! They went out of their ways to help Alyssa and I with whatever we needed during the residency, and they kept us very well fed! Their adorable dogs Madison and Missy were great, too! Joining us for our first week on the road was Reid, our absolutely fantastic, groovy trainer! This past week could not have been so successful or exciting without his support, knowledge and encouragement.

A really nice article was printed up about the auditions in the local paper (The Dalles Chronicle) that Ray works for. I’ve included the link for your viewing pleasure: http://www.thedalleschronicle.com/news/2010/06/news06-17-10-03.shtml

There were two photos included in the printed article, and there was one minor misquote (it is written that Alyssa said something about how the kids do what adults deem impossible – putting on a musical in one week – but it was actually something that I had talked about)…oh well, you still get the general idea.

Although I can truthfully say that our first week was absolutely exhausting with all of the on-site, real-world learning that went on, it was just s equally rewarding. Watching those kids get up onstage in front of their entire community and seeing them all succeed and have a moment in which everyone was proud of them is touching for even the most apathetic individual. The sheer brilliance that the arts emit is what gives me the strength and determination to undertake the challenge of working with kids who need this program most; suddenly all of the long hours, physical strains and mental fatigue fades into the smile of a child onstage learning first-hand that he or she has the power to shape and transform the rest of his or her life into one radiant spectrum of different emotions and experiences after another.

It was pretty exciting to see so much community excitement about Missoula Children’s Theatre and overall, Alyssa and I had a fantastic first week on the job with a fun, great group of kids!

I’ve left the majority of my narration to the old adage “a picture’s worth a thousand words…” Enjoy the photos! ***It seems I am unable to upload photos at the moment, however if you are absolutely itching to see some pics, feel free to visit lisadmichaels.wordpress.com! (editor’s note – here are a few of the photos Lisa couldn’t upload)

Hello all,
This week went by much faster than last week did. This week was a week full of alterations. We had to get all of the costumes for The Magic Flute out of the shop. We made it for the most parts. We have a few costumes that need some labels and some small adjustments. I worked on a jacket for a couple of days, I had to take down the sleeves and lengthen the hem. It was challenging but I did it!! I also worked on the children’s costumes, which are bright orange and were killing my eyes. I learned a lot about alterations and I learned that biased tape is a pretty cool thing. HAHA
This week we also got out crew assignments for wardrobe. For Madame Butterfly I will be in charge of dressing a group of female chorus members. For Magic Flute, I am in charge of all the children. I think there is about 9 or 10 children for me to dress. We have a wardrobe meeting on Monday and then at the end of the week we will be watching the run through.
This coming week we are going to be spending a lot of long and late nights in the costume shop. It is getting closer to dress rehearsals. I have been told that I have to make a pair of hakyama pants (for Madame Butterfly) in one day! That will be a challenge because I feel like I am a very slow sewer and am not up to their ideal speed. Hopefully I will get there.
There is so much to do and see in New Mexico. I wish I had a car so I could just drive around. It is so beautiful here. Yesterday when the shop was on a break, we went out to the back deck of the Opera House and looked at Los Alamos. There was a GIANT cloud of smoke, we were informed that it is one of the forest fires that have been burning for the last week or so. There are tons of cool stores and shops in The Plaza. There is a cowboy/western apparel store that is called “Kowboyz” it is so cool to see all the boots and hats!
Hope all is well in New York!!

When I attended the callback for Missoula Children’s Theatre, I went in with an “I’d love to have a summer job, but I’m not really expecting much out of this” attitude. I was so pleased and excited to hear that MCT was seriously considering me by calling me about how best to contact my references, etc. and I was even more amazed and delighted to be offered an actual summer touring contract: my first professional – heck! – my first real job!

Since arriving in Missoula, Montana and enduring a full two weeks of 12+ hour days (including weekends) learning about the company, learning about how to teach children, and learning the ins and outs of an entire show (all characters, blocking, songs, choreography, technical elements, set construction, and every other aspect imaginable!), I admit that I was feeling a little run-down. The job can seem so big, and with the time constraint of a mere five days to mount a full-scale musical production with a varied-size cast (with a varied talent-base) of kids grades 1 through 12, my eyes began to glaze over. How could I, a twenty-year-old girl from Michigan who was still in the middle of her education and training, possibly pull this off without the need for intense therapy afterward?

It wasn’t until today (Wednesday June 7, 2010) that I began to realize my work with Missoula Children’s Theatre meant so much more than just spreading the universal language of the arts to kids; it is truly about teaching children life skills through the medium of the performing arts, and showing them that they can, and will, succeed with effort and a little teamwork.

*****

Around 3:30 p.m. I was pacing the lobby of the MCT building and trying to convince myself that the nervous energy I was feeling was a mere byproduct of too much coffee at breakfast. However, it actually came from the realization that soon I would be asked to teach a song and dance to real, live kids in an effort practice my skills as an educator. Scary, huh? I plastered a huge smile on my face and walked into the room where I would see if I can really handle the job I was supposed to carry out for the next three months. As the “stunt kids” filed in (“stunt kids” being local children from the community who regularly participate in MCT shows and events), reality seeped into my system, and I could not escape the fact that all of the training I experienced for the past nine days was going to be thoroughly put to the test.

With three lovely young ladies, I taught the Pinfeather Bird Trio their solo chunk of the song “Friday’s Seaside Resort” from Robinson Cruso, complete with the choreography. I am pleased with what I presented, though I certainly know I still have much to learn! What is most daunting, though, is the awareness that now I have completed my practice teaching with the real children, my training is essentially fulfilled. On Sunday morning Alyssa and I will drive our little red truck out of the MCT parking lot for the last time until late August. Wow.

After our dinner break tonight, we all gathered in the main theatre and watched the documentary “The Little Red Truck”. For anyone who has not yet seen this film, you must do so immediately! While sitting amongst my fellow TADs (Tour Actor/Directors) and the MCT staff, I came to understand just how important this job is to the over 65,000 children a year that are positively affected by Missoula Children’s Theatre. We go into cities and towns that may not have a very prosperous arts program, or perhaps no art program at all. We cast the children who have been told they can never succeed, the children whose disabilities have hindered them in the past, the children who thought no one would believe in them, and we give them the opportunity and encouragement to do what most adults consider to be impossible: they learn, memorize and perform an entire musical in six days (20 hours of rehearsal, sometimes even less than that) for family, friends and the community. They discover what it takes to achieve goals and show all who have doubted or underestimated them that they have what it takes to flourish and thrive. When that little red truck pulls into a new city or town each week, it brings a positive life-changing experience to the children who need it most.

Words cannot express how completely grateful and honored I feel to get to spend three months of my life, my entire summer, literally changing children’s lives for the better. Perhaps the most amazing part is that not only do I feel like I am teaching and helping them, but I know that they are teaching and helping me to reach my full potential as an educator, teacher, and most significantly, a human being.

I can already tell that this summer will be extraordinary.

P.S. I have been so busy with training that I really haven’t had much time (or opportunity) for taking pictures. I will take and post some before I leave Montana on Sunday to officially begin my tour, so look forward to visuals then!

Hey all!
My name is Anna Slocum, I am a Junior BFA Theatrical Production and Design major with a concentration in Costume Design. I am a new student blogger and am happy to tell you all about my summer and what I am doing at SUNY Fredonia.
This summer I am currently in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have an internship with the Santa Fe Opera. My title is a stitching/ wardrobe apprentice. I have been here for a week now. I am starting my second week. My contract is from May 31st till August 28th. I am sewing costumes on all 5 of the operas this season and I will also be running the shows on the wardrobe crew and possibly a dresser for a show or two.
At SUNY Fredonia, all of the theatre students are urged to apply for internships and summer job opportunities to get more experience. I was shocked when I heard back from Santa Fe. I was not expecting to get this internship. As many of you might have read in my update that was posted by Tom. I am one of the youngest stitchers in the costume shop of 65 people. I have been told that Santa Fe had received more than 1000 applicantions for summer positions. I am very honored to have this opportunity. It is going to be a busy summer and I will be working LONG hours!
I will be giving weekly updates about what I am doing here and what I am working on. I look forward to your comments and opinions. Hopefully I can post a few pictures as well so you all can follow my progress. I hope everyone is having a great summer!

All is well here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I arrived last Sunday. The flights were all fairly short and I sat next to nice people on all three plane rides. It has taken a little time getting used to the different altitude. Santa Fe is about 7000 feet above sea level. It is so beautiful here. The weather is beautiful and the sunsets are gorgeous. This past weekend everyday was in the hundreds! Very hot!!! You can see 3-5 different sets of horizons. There is no grass here, just a lot of dirt! HAHA. My apartment is very nice; I share it with two other girls. Erin is a lighting apprentice and Caroline is a dye shop apprentice. They are both very nice! The first week of work was a lot of information and rules. It was very repetitive and at times boring. I learned a lot about the Opera house and how it got started. The placement of the opera house was very strategic, meaning that the spot where the theatre sits has the best acoustics in that area.

It is very intimidating being here. I feel like everyone is better than me and older. I am one of the youngest people in the costume shop. Everyone else is either seniors in college or have a couple years of grad school under their belt. On the flip side, me being one of the youngest has some advantages. I don’t have a set way of doing things, so I can learn from others about what will and will not work. I also kind of like hearing about people’s programs and thinking to myself that Fredonia really has a great program and I am lucky. A lot of students have been telling me that they are designing their first shows in the fall as seniors in college, and I have my first design as a Junior!

Sewing wise, I have learned several different little tricks and kind of a new way to sew. I had to get used to the way my draper, Lara, expects our sewing. I did several stitching samples and I started two different garments. I am going to have made two underskirts for the kimonos that will be worn in Madame Butterfly. I will be working on all 5 operas. I will also be running most likely all 5 shows backstage on wardrobe and as a dresser. That will be fun but long hours. The operas don’t start until 9 pm because that is when the sun goes down and will run for 3-4 hours. The theatre is outdoors and the sunsets right behind the stage.

Hope all is going well in New York.
